NEW AMERICANS IN THE CLASSROOM:

A Deeper Dive

Professional Development Class

Course Details

Learn more about working with students from a refugee background! In this lively, interactive course we will cover:

Refugee 101 – How do refugees arrive in the US? What is it like to be forced to leave your homeland?

Trauma – How does trauma interfere with learning? How can we respond to students who are triggered? What teaching methods foster resiliency?

Multilingual Learners -- How does it feel to enter a classroom in a strange language, in a strange land? How can teachers (both content and MLL teachers) make learning accessible for new American students?

Disruptive Behavior – What might be the roots of this for immigrant students? And what can we do about it?

Cross-Cultural Kids – How do grief and identity play out for these students, and how can we be supportive?

Family Engagement – What do refugee parents expect from schools? And what are some concrete techniques for communicating with families?

Hear firsthand from:

• Students with a refugee background

• Teachers working with English language learners

We will model concrete instructional strategies and

practice ways to reduce stress and trauma.
